| Comments: | Got back from Ireland early last week. Did not do any touring. Went to see my 8th grandchild (girl) and spend time with my son and his wife, Carla McGilloway. Went shopping at both malls uptown, Sainsbury's doing the family shopping. Went to Ness Country Park which is a new park and it was absolutely great, also went to St. Columba's Park on the Waterside and it was also great, both times on family outings that they do almost every weekend. My son works in security at the U.S. Consulate in Belfast but his schedule at the time allowed him to be off for ten of the 18 days I was at his home. Had a great time. |

| Comments: | At the ripe young age of 19 I was sent to. Derry to start my Radioiman duties. At that time I was fresh off the streets of Pittsburgh and to say the least quite a handfull. Well I didnt know how fortunate I was to have been under the command of Captain Al Ashurst during these very impressionable years. Anyone who was there when Captain Ashurst was in command can testify that the Captains ability to communicate to and get the best out of his personnel was exceptionnal. I for one will be forever indebted to this man for the things he did for me and countless other young men, And the positive lessons he taught us.I think of him often and wish I could see him and let him know face to face. He deserves the hug and affection a father would deserve.Thanks again Captain. You have made a difference in my life. As usual everything was gran on the Emerald Isle, however on the last week of May there were three consecutive days of record weather temperatures of 24c and 25c. Unheard of heat and sun. Everyone was down to almost their skin as the locals were soaking the rays. The young ladies were dressed to the nines in their best summer attire, somebody needs to open a base here, quick! | Comments: | I am expressing condolences for/from the 69-70 NCS base basketball team to the family/friends of Ronnie Bush (as the team called him). I know every member would feel a great loss of this teammate and friend. What a great young guy this was....he was tall, blond , a magnificent smile....too handsome to be fair to the rest of us for sure. But best of all (FROM A TEAM PERSPECTIVE) "he had a great "Jump Shot" from anywhere in the interior to 18-20 feet out. I can still hear the "swish" of the net as his soft shots went through and his strut back to defense. We had a great bunch of guys on that team, and though some trnsferred in/out during these years, they were still part of the same team: I remember a few: along with Ronnie was Lance Cramer,Bob Littin, Kenny Doerfler, Jeff...who checked in with Ronnie but I can never remember his last name,Marvelous Marvin Murray, Sean O'Connor, Harry Pangburn, Lenny Lenardson,John Moore, etc. I hope a few more will sign in. Dad was the EM Club Manager from 1967-69. I come back from time to time to have a look at the pictures and reminisce. I love seeing how Derry looked back then. I am negotiating with the HOLIDAY INN, SUN-SPREE in Virginia Beach where we have been before. We are looking at ETA 21 Sept 08 and ETD 25 Sept 08 (Sun-Thurs). As soon as I know the room rates and the charges for the hospitality room, Sunday night welcome reception, and Wednesday night buffet, I will let you all know. However, in order to do this the best way with the hotel, I need to know by the end of this weekend how many people will attend each function. Please feel free to pass the word to any and all, makes no difference when they were in Derry. The MINI originally started for those serving in Derry in the late 50's, but has expanded. I'll gladly pay Continental extra for that kinda stuff and even if the Guiness' which costs more than fuel. I was told I had brought the good weather with me....and I told I was taking it back too. Was up in Rosemount (Village Pub) when we got the word on Sonny D. (another good guy away) who had lived a couple doors away.Ran into Ray Philson (cook and proclaimed "Mountain-Man) and Ned Fagan (long time civilian supvr) for some big time reminiscing! These guys remember everybody (gasp). Got my fair share of football...Derry City doing super in the Eircom and Man-U winning EPL and CL. Priceless stuff. Our old friends Matt Doherty, Tony Harkin,Thomas Kearney, Eugene Bradley send regards to USN FC.75-77. Chick Surko's daughter Nicola had a baby girl and his granddau Carrie had a girl during our stay....and got word on Stan Rodgers g-dau being born recently....all girls...Wow. |

| Comments: | Interesting story. Part #1. 1969 Chief "Greek" Borekas and wife came to visit me and (ex) Brigid at Ballyspallen, Ballykelly. We sat in the living-room, looking out at the darkness and noticed tail-lights cartwheeling as a Mini crashed and came over the hedge into the neighbour's field. The Chief and I went to investigate and found four teens with broken bones and much spattered blood. We put them in the Chief's huge Suburban and took off to Roe Valley Hospital. Part #2. 16th. March 1970, Brigid and I were driving from Belfast with three month old son Mike. My unreliable Vauxhall failed coming past Dungiven. A taxi driver took us home and refused to accept payment. He explained that his daughter was one of the teens mentioned in Part #1. Small World. |

| Comments: | It is with deep regret that I read of the passing of Bridget Badham, our Base Operator. When I was in Derry (70-71), I worked in the Base Admin office around the corner from the Operator's room & often dropped in on Bridget just to chat. She was truly an amazing woman who was always cheerful and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. Back when the base phones had no dial, I discovered that you could reach another number on base by rapidly tapping the receiver hook, counting the number of taps for the number you wished to ring. For example, if you wanted ext. 214, you could tap 2 times quickly, then pause and tap 1 time, then pause and tap four times rapidly, and your call would go through. I phoned Bridget about it and told her she could ignore the rapidly flapping doors on the switchboard for my extension as I was calling another number so as she would not have to bother connecting me. I met him a bit later than most...he was a Chief ( a good one too) and along with Sr. Chief John Fout (same kinda guy) we were all instructors or administrators at Bainbridge, Md. RM"A" school 1970-73. I was second class and received my mentorship (Navy and life) from these two super guys, that still has an influence on me today. Both of their wives/kids and mine were also very close. Condolences to Margaret who did a magnificent job caring for and loving Barney and Barney's children Greg, Jeff and Jeselle from Bridget and I. | Comments: | Today, I, as many did, received the word of our Shipmate Barney Westphal's passing. I went to Derry in June 1963 and spent 3 years of fantastic duty there. The first man that I met was Barney and he greeted me with that glowing smile and "ready to help" attitude. He was a fine man and a true friend. This is a sad time for me as I am also thinking of the passing just a short time ago of Shipmate "Gene Van Kampen. Talk about two dynamic personalties and friends. First memory of him was 1967, Bridget and I had just moved into base housing, 32A next to Baushka and Maureen at 32B. I had a horrible cold and Bridget said "go see Bobby Fitzpatrick at the club and tellem to make you an Irish hot whiskey". What's that? Just go! Got my first one served and Gobish and Dean Ellis, Funk, Bolesic and others were shooting darts (slow night) and asked what the heck was that you're drinking? Hot Whiskey! wanna taste? Before long most of the group was drinking the same. I got home late and knocked, wife opened the door, said "you're full". How many hot whiskeys did you have. Ten! was the answer. | Comments: | I was the first sailor that I can remember that started having wedding receptions in the club, on Nov 15 1966, Maureen and I was married, and had our reception at the old EM club. Bobby prepared the meal for us and it was wonderful. It was appreciated and everyone loved it. I think after that there were many more receptions in the club, and Bobby help prepare a lot of them as well, I am sure that all of them will remember his assistance, and his friendship, and the love he had for all of us while doing these honors for us. The best thing that I, or anyone that knew Bobby, is that when he done something for you he put his heart into it, and his love for his fellow man and friend. Agnes & Family he will be missed by all of us and when we come back to Derry on our regular visits it will be a lose for us not so see him and you together. | Comments: | I'd like to share with all of you the following message I received from Leo Fitzpatrick, son of the late Bobby Fitzpatrick: "He had cancer that we did not know about and last Saturday, the 20th of October, he collapsed and was taken to the hospital. Then, after some tests, I was told Monday morning, the 22nd, he had days to live. It was on his hip bone and had moved to his Kidney. Being the strong man that he was he never complained with the pain he must have been in for at least a year. But Jim he did slip away peacefully and it was best that way for my mother. Please tell everyone who thought so dearly of him. He made the 2 reunions and that was his high light of his last years on this earth after claiming his American citizenship some years ago from his own Dad who was born in New Jersey, USA. Thank you for being a friend of my father and the great memories he passed us on from his time with you all." |

Even our families remember him. I remember when I got married, and at the EM club, he help set up the reception. He took care of all our needs and was a part of it. Then when I left the base for a couple years and came back the family and I went to the club one night to eat. Bobby was cooking the burgers, and said to me, where you been Roy havn't seen you since the wedding, don;t you ever come to the club anymore. I said Gheeesh Bobby I have been gone for about 2 years. Barney was under the knife for 6 hrs and came through as well as could ever be expected......Doc said the bypass blood flow was the best he has seen from this type of bypass operation......Thank the lord...... So, so far so good......He obviously is in intensive care and will be there for some time yet.....The news is good, this battle seems won, but now we need to help Barney win the war..... Pls keep praying for him and his family. We know that all the prayers for them are so helpful..... Paula and I will keep you all informed as we receive the news Barney is in Wake Forest (not sure, maybe has 2 r's) University Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem N.C. | Comments: | Here is the latest on our buddy Barney Westphal (RM, 58-63): On Mon, 22 Oct, Barney will undergo a bypass operation on one of his carotids. Both are 100% blocked and the only blood that is getting to his brain is from capilliaries which the body has developed following the blockages. This operation is very serious and with much risk. However, Barney and Margaret really have no option other than the surgery. For without the successful surgery, there really is no hope, it is just a matter of time. I ask all of you to please pray for a successful outcome for Barney and that God gives him some more quality time with his family and friends. Paula and I are now in Paris until about next June or July, so we will have a big candle burning in Saint Rita for Barney and his family. | Comments: | I am very sorry to send this. Jim Owens (Derry 62 - 64) passed on at 1:26 PM 10/20/07 after a good fight against an unknown problem. After a bout with colon cancer (last three years) and a Hernia operation early this year he was diagnosed with pancreas and liver cancer. Although they contributed to his problem, he suffered an unexplained downturn in late Sept. He is interred at: Roller McNutt Funeral Home, 801 8th AVE. Po. Box 249, 702032, Conway Arkansas. He will buried soon, date unknown at this time. His family is working to obtain a U.S. Navy burial ceremony. He is survived by Veronica Owens (McGillaway) of Derry and three daughters Sandra, Sylvia and Maureen as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. My whole Derry clan arrived for nearly 3 weeks - 1 son, my daughter, son-in-law that I hadn't seen in nearly 20 years, another son I hadn't seen for about 6 years, and two grandchildren I'd never met - 17 yr old grand daughter and 15 yr old grandson. With all of us this side of the pond - 11 people in a 3-bedroom house was a stretch; but we made it. :-) Maybe we'll be able to make the next one. Who knows? |

| Comments: | Searching for anyone who might remember a serviceman who served in Derry, N. Ireland and fell for MAMIE DONNELLY in Gransha outside Derry (Mobuoy Campsie nr Enagh Lough/Fincairn Glen). They had a baby girl in Dec 1944, he was shipped out and sent money and letters for his family that were never given to Mamie. He returned for both after the war but was prevented from seeing them by the Donnelly family. The family members all now dead, never revealed to the daughter her father's name, hometown, branch of service, or rank. We know he was American, and Protestant, and made the trip back to N. Ireland after the war. We are hoping the man himself, or a friend, comrade, or family member would remember something that would help trace the father. Any information, thoughts, advice would be welcome. |

This, I am also told, is how I got the nickname "Skipper," as the the sailors working for my father, CTC Richard Henry ("Dick")Ross, dubbed me the "Skipper of the ship." A close friend of mine in Derry informed me today that she read in the Derry paper that Frank Partridge died Sunday in Altnagalvin hoslital. It did not state what he died of but I do know that we all who knew Frank will grieve over his death. Frank was an ET in Derry from 60-63 and 69-73. When he retired, he moved and lived in Derry. We shall all miss him and keep him also in your prayers. Frank |

It appears that our shipmate Barney Westphal has had a cerebellium stroke. he appears to be doing pretty good, altghough he is in intermediate care. His wife Margaret states he is in pretty good mode. It is unknown how long he will be in the hospital in Bristol, Tenn.. Will try to keep everyone posted as I get any more news of his condition. I ask that all of you keep Barney and his wife Margaret in you prayers. Hopefully they will both get through this troubled time and Barney will be his old self once again (Please God). Frank Smith |

It just changed the site a little.....like we slipped into Tracey's, then the Village at Rosemount and finally at Maileys....or so I'm told. Well I can finally verify that Zack Taylor and June are alive and well in Derry. Had a nice wee chat at the square. They both look absolutely great. And lastly (finally) spent some super time with my friends and football mates. Such as our own Matt Doherty,(Ann) who this year got inducted into the football "Hall of Fame". He was presented a huge football boot made of crystal and inscribed accordingly before the start of a Cup final at the Brandywell. To answer RM Roy Spencer about the Christmas party band at the EM Club - the band was called the FLINGLES, with Ronnie Ramsey (also known as Mike 'Coalman' Ramsey - him being a coalman), Trevor Keys, Mervyn Cargill, Jim Whiteside, and Roy Arbuckle. Also, the photograph of Butch Self - the girl next to him became his wife, Mary. And, to answer Ward Bessette's guestbook question regarding the Dive Club, was the dive master called Ernie Green? | Comments: | A word of warning for those that were scheduled to fly into Derry City Airport for the reunion in July. As of today, 25 May, the Derry City Airport has been closed down for safety reasons. It would be wise to contact your airlines to find out how they are routing you to Ireland if the airport is still closed down in July. Hopefully it MAY be open in July, but if I were you, I would check with the airline you are flying on to check on your flight status. |
