Comments:We had no idea these pictures existed and they just became a part of our photo album. I'd like to thank Capt Ward for sharing those. They are very special. I'd also like to know if anybody can recall an Irish girl across from the main gate that went by the name of Alison. Blue eyes and blonde hair. I went to school with her and I knew her and her brother quite well and would love to hear from them. I believe they lived in the second house west of the main gate. She would be about 48 now. I used to sneak around the main gatehouse all the time to go visit with her and her brother. No idea why I thought I had to sneak. Anybody have pictures of Clooney Park and those TALL slides? (Dad almost killed himself sliding down one. He got the bright idea to bring wax paper with him to sit on. Went off the end of the slide like a bullet!) You might remember that my dad had something to do with the base movies. I distinctly recall we went to a British sub in River Foyle one day were w

Comments:Some time back I found this website and I'm very happy that I did. My father was Lawrence "Larry" Smith, SH2 and my mother was Doloris "Dee" Smith. Dad was the EM Club Manager from 1967-69. I come back from time to time to have a look at the pictures and reminisce. I love seeing how Derry looked back then. I have so many wonderful memories of it. What a joy it was to see Capt. Wards pictures of the 1967 Halloween party and see myself and my sister in them. I was the Mummy swaddled up in white bandages. My sister is the one in the blue and white Miss Muffet outfit with the white cap. I even saw myself in a few other pictures blowing up balloons. We both won the contest for best costume for our age group (thats why you see us going around the pole in a circle, for judging). I can recall winning a cake at the 4th of July event on a cakewalk and lo and behold, there is one picture of Capt Ward's of a cakewalk. (It's the one with the pieces of white cardboard squares on the grou

Comments:MINI REUNION IN VIRGINIA BEACH 2008: Paula and I are still in Paris. My work has me traveling a very heavy schedule internationally, so I do not really have the time to go to Charleston to arrange something there. Sorry about that, perhaps another year. I am negotiating with the HOLIDAY INN, SUN-SPREE in Virginia Beach where we have been before. We are looking at ETA 21 Sept 08 and ETD 25 Sept 08 (Sun-Thurs). As soon as I know the room rates and the charges for the hospitality room, Sunday night welcome reception, and Wednesday night buffet, I will let you all know. However, in order to do this the best way with the hotel, I need to know by the end of this weekend how many people will attend each function. Please feel free to pass the word to any and all, makes no difference when they were in Derry. The MINI originally started for those serving in Derry in the late 50's, but has expanded. Any and all are welcome. Please do respond by no later than the end of the day Sunday this week.

Comments:Got back yesterday after 3 weeks of absolutely great weather in Derry. 14C avg with full sun....except for one day. I'll gladly pay Continental extra for that kinda stuff and even if the Guiness' which costs more than fuel. I was told I had brought the good weather with me....and I told I was taking it back too. Was up in Rosemount (Village Pub) when we got the word on Sonny D. (another good guy away) who had lived a couple doors away.Ran into Ray Philson (cook and proclaimed "Mountain-Man) and Ned Fagan (long time civilian supvr) for some big time reminiscing! These guys remember everybody (gasp). Got my fair share of football...Derry City doing super in the Eircom and Man-U winning EPL and CL. Priceless stuff. Our old friends Matt Doherty, Tony Harkin,Thomas Kearney, Eugene Bradley send regards to USN FC.75-77. Chick Surko's daughter Nicola had a baby girl and his granddau Carrie had a girl during our stay....and got word on Stan Rodgers g-dau being born recently....all girls...Wow.

Comments:Interesting story. Part #1. 1969 Chief "Greek" Borekas and wife came to visit me and (ex) Brigid at Ballyspallen, Ballykelly. We sat in the living-room, looking out at the darkness and noticed tail-lights cartwheeling as a Mini crashed and came over the hedge into the neighbour's field. The Chief and I went to investigate and found four teens with broken bones and much spattered blood. We put them in the Chief's huge Suburban and took off to Roe Valley Hospital. Part #2. 16th. March 1970, Brigid and I were driving from Belfast with three month old son Mike. My unreliable Vauxhall failed coming past Dungiven. A taxi driver took us home and refused to accept payment. He explained that his daughter was one of the teens mentioned in Part #1. Small World.

I first met Ross in the latter part of the 70's, shortly after he finished his Tour of Duty at the Clooney base, when he, like so many others before him, met and married a local girl, and then took the decisive decision of not going back to the States but opting to stay in Derry after their T.O.D. I, for my part, can only express my own opinions, which Im sure, are the shared opinions of all who either met or knew Ross and that is............. He was both A Gentleman.... What many may not know is, that they may be eligible for a UK pension. Mine did and now she gets her own wee pension every four weeks. It’s enough to fill the car up 4 or 5 times a month. For most of us she was the closest thing we had to a "house mother" we ever had in Derry. She was the best. Would someone still living in Derry please copy this post and give to her husband, Arthur. I want him to know how much I appreciated what Bridget did for all of us.

Comments:It is with deep regret that I read of the passing of Bridget Badham, our Base Operator. When I was in Derry (70-71), I worked in the Base Admin office around the corner from the Operator's room & often dropped in on Bridget just to chat. She was truly an amazing woman who was always cheerful and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. Back when the base phones had no dial, I discovered that you could reach another number on base by rapidly tapping the receiver hook, counting the number of taps for the number you wished to ring. For example, if you wanted ext. 214, you could tap 2 times quickly, then pause and tap 1 time, then pause and tap four times rapidly, and your call would go through. I phoned Bridget about it and told her she could ignore the rapidly flapping doors on the switchboard for my extension as I was calling another number so as she would not have to bother connecting me. We had quite a laugh at that, and my system worked great. On my last day in

I met him a bit later than most...he was a Chief ( a good one too) and along with Sr. Chief John Fout (same kinda guy) we were all instructors or administrators at Bainbridge, Md. Both of their wives/kids and mine were also very close. Condolences to Margaret who did a magnificent job caring for and loving Barney and Barney's children Greg, Jeff and Jeselle from Bridget and I. The first man that I met was Barney and he greeted me with that glowing smile and "ready to help" attitude. He was a fine man and a true friend. My sincere condolences go out to Margaret and the family. "Strong winds and following seas", Barney. With sincere regards, Bob Maloney

Comments:Well Bobby Fitzpatrick was and is still everything that has been said, same could be said about Billy, but Bobby was the star. First memory of him was 1967, Bridget and I had just moved into base housing, 32A next to Baushka and Maureen at 32B. I had a horrible cold and Bridget said "go see Bobby Fitzpatrick at the club and tellem to make you an Irish hot whiskey". What's that? Just go! Got my first one served and Gobish and Dean Ellis, Funk, Bolesic and others were shooting darts (slow night) and asked what the heck was that you're drinking? Hot Whiskey! wanna taste? Before long most of the group was drinking the same. I got home late and knocked, wife opened the door, said "you're full". How many hot whiskeys did you have. Ten! was the answer. And how's you're cold? What cold?? You just know Bobby cured a few boys in his day. Rick

Bobby was indeed very proud of his American Citizenship and his passport which he inherited from his late father Leo Fitzpatrick who was born 1904 in Hoboken New Jersey U.S.A. Comments: I was the first sailor that I can remember that started having wedding receptions in the club, on Nov 15 1966, Maureen and I was married, and had our reception at the old EM club. Bobby prepared the meal for us and it was wonderful. It was appreciated and everyone loved it. I think after that there were many more receptions in the club, and Bobby help prepare a lot of them as well, I am sure that all of them will remember his assistance, and his friendship, and the love he had for all of us while doing these honors for us. The best thing that I, or anyone that knew Bobby, is that when he done something for you he put his heart into it, and his love for his fellow man and friend. Agnes & Family he will be missed by all of us and when we come back to Derry on our regular visits it will be a lose for us not so see him and you together. But of course we can always visit with you and talk about him now that he can’t defend himself (He He). Of course nothing can ever be said bad abo

Comments:A Note that I am sending the Fitzpatrick family from all of us and myself. Others may send one as well: Agnes and the Fitzpatrick Family: Your lose, is also our lose as well. Although we are not with you at this time we are also Bobby’s family. The many years that he was a part of the U. S. Navy base at Clooney was a joyful feeling to all that knew him. He had a constant smile, and never a bad word to say to anyone. He was like a father, a Buddy, a friend all rolled into one person. There were many sailors that remember Bobby for his humor, and his help at the Club. His Hamburgers were always just as we wanted them, he would always put that extra touch of something on it to make it taste just right, and that touch was his love and friendship to all of us who knew him and remember him. We are proud to call him a fellow American, but he did not need that citizenship paper for us to call him that. He was one of us and a part of us and our families. I was the first sailor that

Comments:I'd like to share with all of you the following message I received from Leo Fitzpatrick, son of the late Bobby Fitzpatrick: "He had cancer that we did not know about and last Saturday, the 20th of October, he collapsed and was taken to the hospital. Then, after some tests, I was told Monday morning, the 22nd, he had days to live. It was on his hip bone and had moved to his Kidney. Being the strong man that he was he never complained with the pain he must have been in for at least a year. But Jim he did slip away peacefully and it was best that way for my mother. Please tell everyone who thought so dearly of him. He made the 2 reunions and that was his high light of his last years on this earth after claiming his American citizenship some years ago from his own Dad who was born in New Jersey, USA. Thank you for being a friend of my father and the great memories he passed us on from his time with you all."

Comments:Bobby Fitzpatrick: This man will be remembered by all that pass the portals of NST. He was the joker, the fater figure, the friend, the buddy, and all those rolled up into one person. Even our families remember him. I remember when I got married, and at the EM club, he help set up the reception. He took care of all our needs and was a part of it. Then when I left the base for a couple years and came back the family and I went to the club one night to eat. Bobby was cooking the burgers, and said to me, where you been Roy havn't seen you since the wedding, don;t you ever come to the club anymore. I said Gheeesh Bobby I have been gone for about 2 years. Now this part of Derry and the Clooney base will be with us in our memories forever. God bless his family

Comments:Here is the latest on our buddy Barney Westphal (RM, 58-63): On Mon, 22 Oct, Barney will undergo a bypass operation on one of his carotids. Both are 100% blocked and the only blood that is getting to his brain is from capilliaries which the body has developed following the blockages. This operation is very serious and with much risk. However, Barney and Margaret really have no option other than the surgery. For without the successful surgery, there really is no hope, it is just a matter of time. I ask all of you to please pray for a successful outcome for Barney and that God gives him some more quality time with his family and friends. Paula and I are now in Paris until about next June or July, so we will have a big candle burning in Saint Rita for Barney and his family. We wish for the continued blessings for all of you, your family and friends, and may we all stay healthy, happy and safe so we can all come together again. We will try to put together another M

One event stands out......Members of the last of the U.S. Navy football (soccer)teams that represented the Yankee base, held their 30th year reunion last Saturday at Becketts Res-Bar on Foyle road. Present were Matt Doherty, Tony Harkin, Thomas Kearney, Eugene Bradley and myself. Boy did we talk some trash...all related to that great wee team....and its well remembered members, which also included John Reigle, Gary Whitehurst,Brian Dunn,Rey McCauley, Roy Seddon, Big John Rowland,Dave Touchini etc. and the Best Supporters-Fans Ever...Dale Sheeks and Big Rusheon.

Comments:I am very sorry to send this. Jim Owens (Derry 62 - 64) passed on at 1:26 PM 10/20/07 after a good fight against an unknown problem. After a bout with colon cancer (last three years) and a Hernia operation early this year he was diagnosed with pancreas and liver cancer. Although they contributed to his problem, he suffered an unexplained downturn in late Sept. He is interred at: Roller McNutt Funeral Home, 801 8th AVE. Po. Box 249, 702032, Conway Arkansas. He will buried soon, date unknown at this time. His family is working to obtain a U.S. Navy burial ceremony. He is survived by Veronica Owens (McGillaway) of Derry and three daughters Sandra, Sylvia and Maureen as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Veronica is suffering from heart problems at this time probably agravated by the loss of Jim. Her address is 2211 Independence, Conway Arkansas 72034 - 1-501-327-6680.
