Most people didn’t know it but Denis was armed during his watches on the mountain. I have included a letter of commendation I received for an incident where we were fired on one night on a patrol around the site. We had received a notification from the American Embassy in Dublin that they had received information that the IRA may have been planning to do damage to the site. We suspected that it was them that night. After this incident the Navy watches were armed in their patrols there. I can’t remember if Denis received a commendation for that night or not, but I am sure he did, and its wording would match that of mine. Denis and I were great friends. I am not sure if your email address is still active or not, but I entered this msg on the NCS Derry Alumni guest book. All the best to you, and my condolences for your loss. RMC William H. He was posted to USS Saratoga in 1972. I had a few letters from him that year but nothing since. He was a very loyal friend and I would like to know how his life turned out. Comments:	I am writing you trying to learn more information about my father! He was stationed in Derry in the early 70’s! His name is Richard Phillips! He met my mom while stationed there, and returned in the 78ish as I was born in Derry in 1979! I found this site this weekend while at my moms house and she recognized several names of sailors from the list! I know very little about his services in the Navy as he fell sick in 1991, and passed away in 1997! I followed in his footsteps in a way, and currently have been on active duty with the Army for 19 years! I guess as I get older, I’m just trying to teach my kids more about their grandfather! Comments:	I just finished reading "Say Nothing" buy Patrick Radden Keefe. It is the most comprehensive book I have ever read on The Troubles. I highly commend it. For me, it tied up all kinds of loose ends and questions I had about the conflict. I reads like a crime thriller and its depth of reporting is breathtaking.

Comments:	Back with another viewing suggestion if you have Netflix. Search for Derry Girls. It is set in Derry circa 1990 (when the British Army was still there) but it is not really about the Troubles but rather about four girls in a Catholic high school who get themselves in more trouble than the Three Stooges or the Keystone Cops. Uproariously funny and lots of local, familiar street scenes. Enjoy!

Comments:	I apologize if this has been reported already on the blog. if not, I direct your attention to the BBC production “My Mother and Other Strangers.” It is available on Amazon Prime. It is the story of a fictional town in Northern Ireland in 1943 where the U.S Army Air corps had a base (too bad it’s not Navy). I’ve just watched one episode but can say the plot is something all of us can relate to, especially those of you who courted local girls. One tip: turn up the volume on your TV. Comments:	"Jos" was more than my friend, we are brothers. He called me up in April said either you come see me or I go see you. I knew he couldn't get around well so I went and styed for a week. Oh my God did we talk some heavy stuff. Your ears may have been itching.His wife Annette so nice and she cooked 3 full meals a day. I almost didn't get my pants on when I left. We went back to '66 together. The first home I ever stepped into a home in Derry was at his eventual in'laws when he went to see Helen. In the 70's we alternated weeks taking our kids to school at Long Tower boys and Naserath house forthe girls. We once went to my house after work to eat tacos. I ate 21 he ate 20 not counting the brews to wash'em down. Bridget said we were both crazy. And on and on. Yes there are two or three men in this world who are my brothers, Len is in that mix. Comments:	Replying to Kathleen daughter of Denis McDonald,Security guard and mountaineer for the U.S. Navy transmitter site in Dungiven, N.I. upon his passing. A great wee man amd inspiration to us young sailors especially when we got snowed in for 3 to 5 day before there was even a road up "the mountain", our comms antenna blown down, we were on our own until that familiar banging on the control walls, "are you alright lads? It was Denis!! We needed hot food from the Corner Bar at the bottom of the mountain and especially one Xmas Eve, my section was on, two cases of the good stuff pls. Denis never said no. So sorry to here of his passing. He was respected and loved by all on this hill, for sure.

Comments:	Hi all, My name is Carl Campbell – my father Carl Campbell Snr worked in the Chiefs’ club right up until close in 1977.Just to let you know that my brother Liam Campbell has a stage play entitled ‘The Bog Couple’ coming up next week at Derry Playhouse from Tuesday Feb 13 until Sunday Feb18th. It is loosely based on the Neil Simon play which also gave us the wonderful movie starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Mattau. The reason I am posting this is to let you all know that as part of the comedy there are references to ‘The Base’ in the script. Liam’s play is set in Derry in 1976 – which of course marked the Bi-Centennial year for the U.S. As part of the week’s events to mark the play there is also a photo exhibition of the Navy Base. If you have any photographs you feel happy to send to me please do so. I thought you might like to hear about it; and those who live nearby might like the opportunity to call in and view it and perhaps attend the play. If anyone would like more information

My father Larry was an electronics technician (not sure what his rank was at the time) serving at NAVCOMMSTA Londonderry. In 1994 I spend several months walked around the coast of Ireland and Ulster -- I suppose I was trying to understand "where I came from" and what Ireland was meant to mean to me. Traveling alone, I struck up many conversations with the (not at all reserved or shy) Irish and British people and found numerous references to the relationships people in Derry had with the USN personnel that served at NAVCOMMSTA Londonderry. I remember in particular sitting in the cab of a cement truck talking to the middle-aged lorry driver and his touching words about what the base and the energetic young Yanks had meant to the depressed UK economy at the time. Being born in NI has had a large effect on my life. My parents, both from a town outside of Rochester, NY, lived for the first ten month

He also had a fish&chips shop. can't remember what street it was on. Good fish&chips though. When I arrived at ncs The Comm Officer told me that I would be working in the new comm center and learning all departments. This was before we officially moved into the new center. And you know that when we moved in I indeed worked in every section.and the receiver site and the xmitter site. that I enjoyed. I have a few other memories, but I must go now. I hope you've seen or read that it is #1 n Europe for such and people come from all over the world for it. has a part for the children, but the nightly events are the real deal. party party party. They know how.Guildhall square packed with venders, eats, attires etc. Seen all my old buddies at Maileys BlueBell Bar, Jake McCool, Derek Thomas and Margo Kearney, Matt and Ann Doherty, Eugene Bradley and Lily. ran around with Dennis Doherty, worked at barracks and gym. Luvly wife, daughter expecting twins. We went to see Johnny Griffin and family at Greysteel couple times. Of all the stories I tell about Karl there is one I always preface with " I don't recall which of us instigated the event" It involved an afternoon swim at Lough Swilly (Skinny dipping) I'm sure the case of beer consumed between the two of us had a lot to do with it but today out of great respect I take full responsibility for this act. Comments:	I was saddened to read of the passing of Betty Roddy Cohen. Brilliant, Luvly girl. Often in my wives conversations when reminiecing with or about Derry ones. My wife Bridget McCool and I moved into their base house (32B) in '68 as they were being transferred to the States. Steve was a prolific and studied coin collector, however as they moved out he left a large bag of coins behind. His motherload. I personally wanted to go cash it in, but my Derry girl wouldn't abide by that.The next day Steve and Betty descended upon 32B. They were not sure if they had lost it in the packing out and moving or left it in the house. We quickly relieved their concerns and they were so thankful. We had a good laugh over the ordeal as Steve let out a huge sigh of relief. Incidently, Bridgo bought Betty's living room suite, a luvly white leather sofa and chair. Our condolences to the family.

Comments:	I guess I used up my character quota, so here's the rest. I served in Exploit until I made Second Class, and after short tours on two more sweeps, I wangled a transfer back to Derry, and who should be there again but George. I was then transferred to NAS Dallas in 68, and was surprised that there was no evidence of him having been there. I transferred from there to RM"B" School, and again he wasn't there either. Transferred from there to NCS Adak, and lo and behold there he was. We had some great times up there. I am still looking for "Dutch" Quatkemeyer or meier however it was spelled. I ran into Tony Rizzo on Adak and he recruited me for his outfit. I think in Derry they were called "Back Room Receivers". I went to their school and returned to Adak until 73 when I xferred to ADCOP and did one year, and the was sent to Scotland to work in the Back Room again. Comments:	Been perusing you guest books and Taps list. Noticed a name there with just a death date. Curtis Harper, RMCM, died at his California home, when he was trimming his hedges and shrubs. A bee or some other kind of stinging insect flew into his mouth and stung him in the throat. He died from asphyxiation from a swollen throat. Curtis and I were pretty good friends, at least as much as a First Class Petty Officer can be friends with a Master Chief. I am seeing too many names of good friends taken so early in life. All the old guys from 63 to 65 and 66 to 68. George Galligan for instance, I followed him around the world almost. He was the feared traffic checker when I got there in 63, although I worked in ship/shore CW and didn't have to worry about him, but most guys dreaded the "gig sheet". Comments:	I was so pleased to find this site today while I was walking down memory lane about my time as a young girl in Ireland. My father, William (Don) Wilson, was XO on the base in 64-65. I loved the picture of the base in 1960 as I could see the house we lived in and it saddened me to see the pic of the demolished base and especially the flagpole. I remember that pole and the field where we would have parades and play when things were not going on. I was only 7 and 8 when we lived there but I have great memories of the base and of Ireland.

Comments:	I don't know why I thought of this just now but here it is. A few years ago I decided to try my ears on with morse code. I looked online and found several practice websites. Amazingly enough after 35 years or so I was still able to copy about 20 wpm without mistakes. Somewhere in my junk I still have an old code practice test from C school in Bainbridge. I saved it because it was marked on top by the instructor. 800 characters at 30 wpm with no mistakes.

Comments:	Part of Dan's msgs was left out here is the rest of it maybe one of the editors can fix it all together for us!!! on Tuesday, He had a blue casket with American Eagle and Navy ships insert on lid which comes out and I get to keep, he was in his Taconic Ship Sweatshirt with his hat. We draped the casket with the American Flag. His grandson Levi, had made him a Navy pillow and we had it by the casket. We had Navy apparel around. He was very proud to have served in the Navy. The Navy came and presented me the flag and the color guard did the gun salute and taps. Then the gave me the casings in a bag, and a scroll of the meaning of the folds of the flag, and the meaning of taps. One of their members take a piece of an old flag and takes old wood and puts around it. It was very emotional and we all said that it looked like Dan was smiling. He was my best friend and he had my spoiled. We had 34 great years together. With Sadness, His loving wife, Juanita.

Comments:	Got this note this morning from Dan Frazier's wife, sorry to pass it on, had got a message from him a few months ago telling me hs was coming thru Tenn and was going to stop for a visit. Guess we will be later in that old Cardio unit!!! With a heavy heart, I need to inform you that Dan passed away Sunday, October 20, 2013. He had a heart attack and the ambulance came and he was talking as he went out the door but they were not able to save him. The EMT's said he became unresponsive in the ambulance and did CPR all the way to the hospital and then the cardiologist worked on him for quite some time. Dan was looking forward to come and seeing you but I have had pneumonia since July and was just getting to feel better. We took all 4 granchildern to Myrtle Beach for their fall break and arrived back home Friday morning before he passed on Sunday. These will be wonderful memories. Comments:	I just wanted to add something on the recent and sad news (under TAPS) of Jim Eggett's passing in June of this year. Although I didn't know him from Derry, I did have the opportunity to work for him at NCS Rota's transmitter site at Moron, Spain near Seville. He was the OIC there as an LDO LT. One of the finest officers and leaders I've ever had the opportunity to work for. A real professional and always a gentleman of the first order, greatly respected and admired by those who had the good fortune to know him. He always took a personal interest in his people AND the welfare of their families. Being a small-knit community of only 20 or so, he knew everyone and was ready to listen and help not only to the men but to their families. He came packaged with an esprit de corps that lent itself to each and all. He retired from there and just before he left, he'd shown me a photo of a farm house he'd bought in IL and talked of the teaching job he planned to get. I often wond

City of culture events big time, concerts etc. Saw Ned Fagan, said "tell any of them son's of b's that may be left out there that Ned is still here". brilliant visit with him.Sad news also, Willie Canning's (gate guard)wife Anna passed a month or so ago. A luvly Lady in all respects. saw all the lads from our Soccer team, Matt Doherty/Ann, Tony Harkin/Sadie, Thomas Kearny/Margo, Eugene Bradley, talked memories of those glorious UK championship tours/brass monkey! Made multiple visits to Maileys Blue Bell Bar, Creggan's Telstar Bar just in time for my bro-in law Finn McCool b'day, The Village at Rosemount. Great reception at each. Best of all, I visited cemetery many times/laid flowers/prayed for my one and only. She's what the trip was for and will continue for as long as I can get there. All the best to everone. She went peacefully with our kids and grandkids there. I assume she'll be buried in City Cemetery in Cregan with her dad, Willy Murray (passed in 2000) and our daughter, Audrey (passed in Gaeta, Italy in Jul 1968). She's with the two of them, now. She would have been 68 years old exactly one week from today - 05 May. I'll update once I know more. My daughter, Karen, is handling arrangements in Derry. Comments:	I have spent a lot of time these last few months in the old navy base clooney demolishing all the buildings. All the buildings in the old photos were still standing until this summer, the red brick houses, prefabricated houses, Samson hall, bar area with the stage that I saw in the photos. Unfortunately they are now all gone the flag pole at the front gate however is to taken down and moved to the beech hill hotel...we saved something.

Comments:	Just found this when researching fpor a book about my Grandfather who was a Royal Navy Corvette Captain who was invalided out mid war with TB. he lived in Moville on the donegal side of the Foyle and was regularly told off by the local police for signalling to departing ships by using his hall light as a signal lamp! if anyone remembers Mac the Mad Commander of heard of him I'd be thrilled! Comments:	Just something to think about. I've been scanning my old photos (35mm b&w and color, and 35mm slides) to digital the last couple of months. It'll take some time because in slides alone I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 200,000. Many are from Derry from the 1960s and 70s during my 3 tours there. I also have a lot of old naval scenes from the 60s and 70s. On my 'twilight' tour in London (80-83) followed my civilian tour with NSIC (83-88) I also freelanced as a photojournalist and wrote a monthly column for a Brit sports magazine and had many photos published in the US & UK. I have several 35mm color prints and slides already scanned, but lots more when I finally get to those :-). When I get to them, I'll try and post some of the oldies from Derry here. I also have newer digital photos from my visit there last June. Naval photos I'll be posting on my facebook page. Just a heads up.

Comments:	All Hands Notice. If any of you are being prescribed Niaspan by your VA Doc, or private Doc, here's a news flash. My private health plan co-payment for a one month supply of Niaspan is $35.00. I can get it from the VA Pharmacy for $9.00/mo. A couple of days ago, I spotted a product in the Pharmacy area (vitamins and supplements passageway) named "Slo Niacin, 500 mg." I called my civilian Doc and discussed with him and he looked it up and found that the formula was virtually the same (only the "carrier" was different) and he told me I could start using Slo Niacin instead of the prescription Niaspan. The cost for 100 tablets of Slo Niacin at WalMart is $12.94. Yesterday, I received my prescription from the VA pharmacy. They sent me the exact same thing, in the Slo Niacin packaging and all, that I can purchase from WalMart. So...from the VA, it's $27.00 for a 90 day supply, and it's $12.95 for a 100 day supply from WalMart. I've called my VA Doc and filled her in

For many of us who spent time amongst the old mechanical teletypes, and later as crew members on noisy surface vessels or air craft carriers, and/or in air squadrons, high-frequency hearing loss becomes worse as we age. Have your hearing tested at the VA...the co-payment if you have no service connected disability is only $50.00...and if you need hearing aids as I did, they're provided free of charge from there. You'll also receive batteries for life at no charge, and they will be replaced free of charge if you break or lose one. FYI, my civilian HMO cost for the same make and model hearing aids the VA supplied for free would have been $6,000.00 for the pair. That's right Shipmates....Six Thousand Dollars for the pair.

Comments:	It is with great sadness that I report the loss of another of our beloved Derry friends, William "Willie" Canning (gateguard). He passed peacefully on October 02, 2011 with family members and friends present. I had the priviledge of being a friend of Willie and his lovely wife Anna since 1966 and visited with them on every trip I made to Ireland. You may remember that in the past I have bragged about Anna making the best cup of tea I ever tasted. She took great care of that wee man and vice versa. They were a lovely couple. As I left his home this past Sep. Willie saluted me and kept his salute up until I saluted back. I believe he was giving me a "wee message". Address is 30 Dungiven Road, Londonderry, N.I.

On Thursday, Medicare officials announced the new Part B premium rates for 2012 – which were significantly lower across the board than most people had expected. And for the first time in memory, large numbers of seniors will actually see their premiums drop significantly. Most beneficiaries with incomes under $85,000 (or $170,000 for couples) will see a small increase in monthly premiums from $96.40 to $99.90 – an increase of 3.6%. But for some in that category (specifically, those who first became eligible for Medicare in 2010 and 2011) the $99.90 rate will be less than what they paid in 2011. Comments:	Just completed my bi-annual visit to Derry. Took my first cousin (retired E-8 Radioman- had a tour at Morroco) with me and we had a great time. Met Ted Malcor and his wife at St. Columbs's Cathedral, they were assisting with the tourist's. My best time was spent with my newest Grandaughter, Mia, who will be four years old on May 16th and is expecting to see her new sister somewhere around 26 January 2012 and my ninth grandchild. Comments:	To all the folks that attended the NST Reunion that went to the Former beautiful Base at Clooney, what did you thing of that War ZONE, Looks like the aftermath of a movie where the boom hit and there are no people around. Housing torn up and grounds all grown over, I ti a shame it was not used for the people over there. They wnt in a converted all the housing over to 220V and OFCH for the British Military, why did they give or sell the homes to the local people before they got destroyed, or at least offer them to some of us to buy for get away homes (HE HE). Wait until you see the photos some of us are sending in of what is left. Buy now I think they will be pulling the bulldozers onto the base and start tearing them down. I think they help off until after this reunion. My wife, My son ROy Jr who was born there went out to see it later on when they got over, and my wife would not even get out of the car to look, said it was simply a disgrace to the American people who lived ther

Comments:	Yeah, I remember those days. Do you remember a Bob Hill. Second class. He was one of the ones that was on the USS Pueblo when it was captured. I remember him as part of the master at arms group and Bon was always trying to play the tough guy. When you mentioned Chief Marcum , it reminded me of that.

Comments:	July 1, 1971. Admiral Elmo Zumwalt assumes command as CNO. Z-Grams began flowing within days as I recall. Heady stuff to a young CYN3 in the Comm Center at NCS Londonderry. Comments:	My grandfather was Alex Stewart headgroundsman at the us Base in Derry. I have been told he was the longest serving civilian in a us base not sure if this is in britian or all over. He died on 5th November 1989. Was just wondering if anyone remembers him and if anyone has any photos of him. I recall going to a barbeque as a child with a pig being cooked can still recall the smell which brings back happy childhood memories
