Abe Saperstein was the owner and coach of the world famous Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. He donated the trophy in appreciation for the Navy Londonderry Basketball team's participation in a preliminary game held in Dublin that featured an exhibition game by the Globetrotters. The Base offered the trophy (in perpetuity) to the winner of the annual Athlone BasketballTournament, held in Athlone, Ireland.
