2019 REUNION IN DERRY - ANNOUNCEMENT OF DATES AND HEADQUARTERS HOTEL

All Hands,

Your USNAVCOMMSTA Londonderry Alumni Association is pleased to announce the official dates of our "2019 Reunion in Derry" -- July 29, 2019 through and including August 2, 2019.

The City Hotel, Queen's Quay, Derry, Northern Ireland, has once again been selected as our Headquarters Hotel.

Our fun-filled week will commence with our Opening Night Cocktail Party with Buffet being held on the evening of Monday July 29th, continue with our Grand Gala Cocktail Party with Buffet on the evening of Wednesday July 31st, and end with our Closing Night Dinner Dance being held on the evening of Friday, August 2nd, 2019.

Additionally, on one day during the reunion period we will be scheduling a Dedication Ceremony for our old Base Flag Pole and Memorial Monument on the campus of the new Foyle College which is now located on the grounds of our former Clooney Base. During the ceremony we plan on raising the actual US Flag that last flew on the flag pole the day our old base was officially closed in 1977. The Commanding Officer at the time of closing, Captain Tom McKeown, has undertaken the task of delivering that historic flag for the ceremony. What a thrill it will be to see that actual flag fly once again! We are in the process of planning a Grand ceremony, one that you will not want to miss! The date, time, and other particulars of this Ceremony will be announced once we complete our negotiations with Foyle College.

More information on hotel room rates, event pricing, and the Flag Pole and Memorial Dedication Ceremony will follow in the near future.

You now have the dates, so please mark them on your calendar!

Questions? Please contact a Reunion Committee Member:

Via e-mail (click on name) to either Dennis Kolodziej or Jim Sullivan.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Warm Regards,

Dennis Kolodziej and Jim Sullivan - USNLAA Reunion Committee

2017 REUNION - ANNOUNCEMENT

Your NavCommSta Londonderry Alumni Association's 2017 Reunion Committee is pleased to announce the host city for our 2017 reunion, which is ....

..............Drum Roll, please..................

Las Vegas, Nevada.

We are currently contacting hotels and it would be most helpful to know approximately how many of our Association members would look forward to attending the 2017 reunion in Las Vegas.

While we have not selected exact dates at this time, we can tell you we are looking at the period July through September. We found in the past that hotels offer better (i.e., lower price) room rates to groups who book during time periods when the hotel is looking to fill rooms. So, we'll give them that time period and see what they offer.

It would be most helpful to us if you would give us an indication of whether or not you would consider joining us in Las Vegas for the reunion. A YES reply would NOT be a commitment, as we know things can change over the next year. We will only use your reply to gauge the approximate number of rooms we might need to block for the reunion, which is also helpful in getting lower price rooms.

Please respond by e-mail to ford427@peoplepc.com with a reply of either YES, or NO.

If yes, indicate how many will be attending.

Thank you!

Final Note: Please do reply to this posting, as we really need to hear from you!

Reply via e-mail (click on name) to either Dennis or Jim.

Kind Regards,

Dennis Kolodziej and Jim Sullivan - USNLAA 2017 Reunion Committee

"AN INVITATION TO JOIN THE AMERICAN LEGION POST BEING ORGANIZED IN DUBLIN IRELAND"

Dear Fellow Navy Veteran,

I'm writing to invite you to become a Charter Member of a new American Legion Post -- the LT Michael Murphy Post, IR-01 -- proposed for formation in Dublin, Ireland.

The LT Michael Murphy Post of the American Legion is being organized in the greater Dublin area to honour the service and sacrifice of an Irish-American hero and Medal of Honor winner and to provide current and future members of the American Legion with an opportunity to serve and support fellow veterans, fully in the spirit of teamwork and “self-before-others” that characterized the life and service of Navy SEAL LT Michael Murphy.

We are especially eager to attract NAVCOMMSTA Londonderry veterans to the Post, as you represent the last U.S. military service activity on this Island -- a living link to the long relationship between American service members and the people of Ireland.

Can you join the Dublin post if you live somewhere else, including the USA?
Yes – you will be bona fide members of the American Legion and entitled to member privileges anywhere in the world. If you are an existing Legion member, you are very welcome to transfer to new Post IR-01. Please know, however, that you cannot belong to two posts at the same time.

Regarding our Post Home, I am pleased to advise that we have reached agreement with Malahide Yacht Club in north County Dublin to provide us with availability of their lovely club facilities on a regular basis for both business and social meetings. This is an outstanding, modern facility located on the waterfront in the village of Malahide. If affords all members easy access by rail, bus and automobile. The American Legion’s use of the club will ensure both a sense of identity for the Post and long-term continuity for its programmes.

All you have to do to join the Legion is to complete the Legion’s Application Form (or “Notice of Transfer”). Your dues of €40 (or $40) for the coming year (2015-2016) will be payable upon Post approval by the Legion later this summer.

For all interested in joining or intending to transfer, Frank Ekstrom (ex-ET1, USN - NAVCOMMSTA Londonderry) and I will be attending the 2015 Reunion in Derry City. You will have an opportunity to ask questions about the new Post and to join the work of the Organizing Committee (yes, we'd love to have additional volunteers).

Please contact John directly at jhshanahan@gmail.com for membership application or a transfer request and additional information on the Post.

John Shanahan and Frank Ekstrom will also be at the 2015 Derry Reunion to answer questions and to pick up your enrollment forms.

Also, please see our new Facebook page at "https://www.facebook.com/AmLegionIreland"
American Legion Post IR-01 Dublin,Ireland
for updates on our Post start-up.

Kind regards,

"John"

THE "500" CLUB

An appeal from the USNLAA President.

Of the many accomplishments of which our Alumni Association can be justifiably proud, I believe our providing academic scholarships for deserving Derry students of The North West Regional College (NWRC) in Derry would surely rank among the most satisfying.

Through the generosity of our members over the past eight years, our "Derry Scholarship Program" has awarded thirty-two scholarships totaling 8,000 pounds sterling (over $12,500 US) to deserving students in the Engineering program and IT & Computing program at NWRC.

Donations both large and small continue to come in through our 500 Club program, for which we are most thankful. However, we find ourselves approximately $1,200 short of the amount needed to fully fund the scholarships for this year.
Thus I would ask that you join with me in making a small donation at this time which would allow the Association to continue our support of this worthwhile effort.

NWRC has publicly stated that our award is considered to be a "prestigious scholarship " within NWRC educational community and we, as members of USNLAA, can feel justifiably proud of this designation. I would hope you would be supportive of continuing forward with our fully funded award this year.

Your donation can be made by check made payable to U.S. NAVCOMMSTA
Londonderry Alumni Association, or USNLAA for short, with a notation
"Scholarship Fund" and mailed to: U.S. NAVCOMMSTA Londonderry Alumni
Association, P.O. Box 108, New Boston, MI 48164-0108.

Thank you,
Jim Sullivan, President, USNLAA
